Credit Recovery The Present The restructuring of the alternative education options in the North Santiam School District 29J will generate initial focus on the large number of students who are Seniors or who are in their fifth year of work in the program. Transcripts will be reviewed and one of three recommendations will be made; Winema (CCC) program, GED (CCC), or for those who are within seven credits to graduate, Stayton High School alternative options. There will be two alternative options at Stayton High school. The school day alternative will be set up by instructional period for seven periods with two licensed staff and two educational assistants. Licensed staff will teach one section of an elective class and that will be offered once in the morning and once in the afternoon. In addition these staff will monitor the Odyssey ware and computer lab. “Night school” will be offered for three hours after regular school hours with the intention of serving students who have been expelled by the district, students in need of credit recovery and any student who are placed there due to 504 plans or IEP plans. Efforts will be made to schedule some regular education classes for those students previously in different alternative programs. Core area classes, with direct instruction will be a priority for these kids. The Future The focus of the alternative education options will continue to serve older students who require academic assistance but will shift in focus to students who are struggling in the lower grades. Students need to be identified early to have the most direct impact. In addition to the shift in focus, an expansion of options will be sought in order to be able to serve students in the area of vocational and technology. It is important to nurture the relationship between Chemeketa Community College and Stayton High School. We will continue plans to remove the separation between alt education programs and regular education so students can easily move from one to another. It is very important to investigate the various programs that are available in order to create an alternative school that will serve a wide variety of academic, social and emotional needs.
