Welcome to the new website for the North Santiam School District. The District is located east of Salem along Highway 22, continuing into the foothills of the Cascade Mountain Range. The District covers about 100 square miles and includes the communities of Lyons, Mehama, Stayton, and Sublimity and is comprised of seven public schools and three private schools. The seven public schools located on five sites, educate a student population of nearly 2,500 students. The District supports the private schools in its boundaries with special education and special program services, transportation, building usage, playground usage, and lunch programs. High School also provides access to sports team participation, extra curricular activity participation, and/or coursework to Regis High School students when it is unavailable to them through their private school. Schools within the North Santiam School District include:
• Mari-Linn Elementary School(K-8)
• Sublimity Elementary and Middle Schools (K-8)
• Stayton Elementary School
• Stayton Intermediate and Middle Schools (4-8)
• Stayton High School (9-12)
• Regis High School (9-12)

Each year members of the District’s Management Team prepare goals for the upcoming year for their buildings and departments. Buildings principals rely on assistance from their staff and Site Council in preparing these goals. For a copy of my specific goals for 2009-10 look under Superintendent>Goals or click on the link below: http://nsantiam.orvsd.org/sites/nsantiam.orvsd.org/files/Supt.Jack%20Adams-%20Goals%202009-10.pdf .
The decisions made by me are based on what is best for ALL kids in the District, which does not always equate to what is best for an individual student. Safety is a prime example of this. When expelling a student who has brought a knife or gun to school with the intent to harm others, the threat must be removed. However this means removing a student from school with consequences that a parent might not think is best for their individual student. In my chair I must think about all students and how my decision will impact them as a group. With the economic crisis upon us, community members need to be aware of how school funding is connected to Oregon State revenue and how it impacts all students. I report each month to the Board on information that is given out to Superintendents at meetings across the State. Since October of 2008, the District has lost over a million dollars worth of funding. Figures change on a daily basis as we try to get a handle on how to make budget cuts without impacting student programs. Staff at NSSD have agreed to cut contract days essentially reducing wages and agreed to freezes on their salaries and benefits for 2009-10. This agreement was made to save jobs and keep existing programs for kids through the end of 2009-10, with the hope for improvement in State School Funding by the beginning of 2010-11. You can find the latest PowerPoint presented to the Board of Directors on what is happening with school funding at Superintendent>State School Funding Update or by clicking on the link below: http://nsantiam.orvsd.org/content/superintendent-state-school-funding-update .
